"Run, run, before they catch the damn ball!"
"Shut up you bastard," She grumbled under her breath, sweat dripping into her mouth each time she opened it. But Aldyth could do nothing about it except clutch the paddle harder and sprint across the football field.
Fun right?
Not at all. It was the mere fact that it was the whole field, not a section, not a corner. And that the coach was wanting to turn a simple game of cricket into a hell place.
Suddenly, she could hear something whiz across the side of her face. Was it a fly? A bee? Or could it be her pride in being the bad mouth, trying to run away. She pushed her legs harder, her face twisted in sheer determination. She could see it now. The ball was rolling towards the boy that stood in a stance behind the target. His hands were cupped, yet he wouldn't budge to run to the ball. A wicked smile was plastered on his face as he rumbled, "Aldyth is gonna get ouuut, Aldyth is gonna get ouuut."
Your gonna get a messed up faaace. Once I see you after schoool.
She bit her lip, swinging the paddle over the side of her shoulder as if to swing at a base-ball. She gripped its handle harder and dug her heels into the dirt before pushing back out. Taking a quick glance over her shoulder, she could see her partner was nearly there.
"Shiz."
She didn't intend for it to be loud, but thanked the lord she didn't say the real word. A minor substitute, thats all. Sucking in a breath, she could see the ball touching his finger tips, then rolling into his hand.
Giving out a cry, she jumped forward, landing the paddle with a whack on the base. The boy, oblivious to the fact her paddle was already there, sent the ball flying into target. The board on top of the sticks clattering to the ground.
She gave a satisfied smile, turning to the boy with a glint of evil in her eyes.
"Sorry to burst your bubble," She prodded a finger at his chest, "But I'm not out."
There was a sharp whistle, and she turned abruptly to face her P.E. teacher.
"You're out." His breath was hot and sticky against her face. The colour drained from her face and her throat suddenly went dry. "What?" She managed hoarsely. The teacher nodded, throwing a thumb behind his shoulder.
"You heard me, you are out."
Aldyth looked around to see her partner with an angry expression. "Thanks a lot Aldyth," She said, throwing down her paddle. Aldyth cringed, turning back to her teacher, "How could I be out?" She cried, resiting the urge to cuss at him. He smiled, wiping away some greasy, black, sweaty hair from his eye. Nodding towards her paddle he said, "Your paddle was up."
"Yeah, after he hit the thing down."
The teacher shook his head, saying in an annoyed voice, "Why don't you just sit out if you are going to act like this."
Aldyth could hear snickering in the background. Her frown turned into a devilish smile. Flicking some brown hair over her shoulder, she said sweetly, "Sure, Mr. I know how to play cricket the un-right way."
Not waiting for an answer, she made her way across the field, and up to the bleachers.
She climbed to the last row at the very top and sat down.
Aldyth watched the game with a glum expression. It was dearly fun while it lasted, even if the teacher was a total stick in the mud. Even if he was a total bastard. Sighing, she rested her head at the palm of her hand, closing her eyes. The gentle hum of the bees and birds made her a bit tired. Besides, running up and down a field while hitting a ball could make anyone sleepy.
She licked her dry lips and reopened her eyes. The brightness of the sun made her squint a little bit. When it was all better, she could see the tiny dots of her class mates like little ants crawling.
She sighed again, and turned her gaze to the lower bleachers, watching the people there.
Wait people?
When did this school ever get visitors?
She couldn't make out any detail, but curiosity gripped her. Without hesitation, she slipped down the top row. Her heart thudded against her chest, and she took in a worried breath. What if they were scientist? Or teachers? Would she get in trouble? Shaking the thought from her mind, Aldyth looked sheepishly over her shoulder. She could just go back, it wouldn't hurt to wait till class was done to spy on these strangers.
But what if they leave before then?
Turning back around, she gasped as she ran right into someone. Aldyth fell, her arms outstretched trying to grasp something to hold onto. She landed right on her rear on the step she was on.
In a loud and irritated voice she shouted, "What the hell?"
