to be on the edge, breaking down &&THERE'S NO ONE THERE TO SAVE YOU [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,background-color: #36648B;] |
[/img] i52.tinypic.com/103s9ip.png[/img] [/div] The sun danced above in the sky, it's rays shining down on the brick squares that paved a perfect sidewalk. Perfect. Everything in this place was perfect. And it disgusted her. Ivory has been the punching for the mere fact of not being a perfect child, and now being in a place where everything was the same, not anything had a defect, it was like rubbing salt water on a raw wound. It burned, to say matter-of-factly. Sitting on the wooden park bench, Ivory twisted the silver chair around her neck with her fingers. A sparkling fountain shot up before her, and here she could actually hear the birds sing. It was lunch period, but instead of sitting in the noisy cafeteria, Ivory preferred to enjoy lunch out here. Yes, she was alone. But the quiet was relaxing, and her skin ached for the sun. Ah, the mere thought of being back on her beach, the sand in her toes and the salty breeze stirring her hair, it made the ache of home so much more unbearable. But the one thing that kept Ivory happy, the one sane fact was that for now, she was not the outlet for anger. Not once in a day was she slapped, kicked, or screamed at. That big, burly monster was out of her life for now, and if she were lucky, he would be out of her life when she returned home. Maybe, just maybe her mother would come to her senses, kick the rotten pair out of their beach house. Then, she could call back her true dad. Together, they could scour the beaches again, he could tell her tails of his work, and together they could laugh as the sun set. Swinging her legs, Ivory let out a lonely sigh, those fantasies would forever stay fantasies. Never would her true father return. In his place would remain that man. The one who inflicted the pain upon her. It was the sad fact of life. Humming an unknown tune, she brushed a long strand of blond hair from her face. Sea green eyes took in everything around her. That's when the tap of another pair of shoes echoed throughout her day dream. Turning her gaze to the source of noise, Ivory froze, a puzzled look painted on her face. WHEN THE BOMBS GO OFF the sun will still be shining
The soft splashing of the fountain and aroma of flowers was soothing to Zodiac. She made sure to come here often to keep the stress from getting to her. It reminded her of where she grew up, the old metal fountain carved with lion heads and covered with chipping blue paint was a far cry from what now lay before her, but it helped her remember.
It was market day and the scent of homemade foods and soaps filled the air. People wandered through the park, stopping at the small stands to buy fresh goods. Children tossed dull bronze pennies into the fountain, and climbed on the low-hanging branches of the magnolia trees. Their dark leathery leaves and large white flowers were what made up the small park. There weren't any other trees or plants, just the magnolias and the fountain. Families explored the historic district of the town, but the fountain and the farmer's market was the main attraction. She stood alone on the brick sidewalk at the base of one of the trees, content in watching the scene around her...
She couldn't see a market going on in this place, despite the resemblance to home. Besides, it was missing her beloved magnolias. Throwing the memories aside she continued on her walk through the small park. Gazing around at her surroundings, warm sun making the nostalgia all the more powerful. She could remember summers at home. The heat and humidity were unbearable at times, but in autumn- as it cooled- she would spend long hours outside. A warm breeze tousled her hair as she came upon her own little spot near the fountain. She almost didn't see the other girl, sitting on the bench, but as she did she gave a pleasant smile.
She didn't attempt at conversation, and instead wondered if she should turn around and go back to the cafeteria. She had finished eating, and found that the time allotted for lunch was way more than she needed. She had been expecting the place to be vacant, but now she felt as if she was intruding upon someone else's space. On the other hand, if she was to just turn around and leave, she would look silly. So instead she gave a small nod to the stranger and stood beside the fountain, running her fingers along it's surface.

[/img] i52.tinypic.com/103s9ip.png[/img] [/div] Ivory shifted in the cool bench, allowing the other girl some more room. Her eyes quickly scanned the other figure, taking in as much as she could in those few seconds. First, the other looked a tad younger, maybe just a year, her height indicated it. She gave Ivory a small smile, then a nod, before turning her attention back to the spouting fountain, running her fingers over its sleek metal surface. Continuing to twirl the cold chain, she debated on whether to speak or to keep the silence. But, after the seconds of quiet dragged on, she couldn't stand it any longer. "Hey," she said softly. "You like coming out here too?" This was the second place that felt most like home to her, the pool was the second. The large, metal building was very deprived of anything happy or warm. Everything was cold, metal, and very lifeless. Very unlike what she was used to, the sun, warm air, and living creatures all around. The warm air blew across Ivory's face, her bare toes dug into the soft, grainy sand. Blue, foamy waves crashed upon the shore, the swishing sound of their arrival echoed throughout the lonely beach. Seagulls called above, cawing their disapproval, no fresh fish today. A small sigh escaped her mouth. The chain around her neck bounced in the breeze. A clanking sound interrupted the waves. A screen door from a small, peach colored house opened. Out stepped a large, burly man. Black hair sprouted up on his head, and some on his chin. Steely blue eyes spotted the girl, and a grunt followed. Cringing, Ivory tried to avoid his piercing gaze, but her eyes seemed to automatically crawl up to his. "Girl, get over here," he growled angrily. Like a robot, her feet moved one step at a time, towards the menacing man. "What were you doing?" he snarled. "Just standing there," Ivory whispered. Raising his hand, he whacked her across the face, causing her to reel backwards. "Now make yourself useful."
The memory caused goosebumps to sprout all about her legs. Reaching her hand up to her cheek, she brushed the spot where she had been smacked long ago. Memory stinging as much as the slap. Ivory felt herself shivering, though the outside was quite warm. Self-conscientiously, she rubbed her arms to stop the quivering. All of this stuff, this worrying, the pain, how could one man do all of that? WHEN THE BOMBS GO OFF the sun will still be shining
She smiled and took a seat next to the other girl. The seconds of silence dragged out before her, and she was about to come up with something to say when the girl spoke. "Hey. You like coming out here too?" Zodiac turned to look at her, still getting over her shyness around strangers. "Yeah, it's nice and peaceful." crossing her legs and swinging them underneath her her slightly she felt the need to add, "The forest too, it reminds me of home." Holding a conversation helped remove some of the awkwardness.
Today wasn't so bad. It was just warm enough outside, and much better than inside. Days went by with little to no distinguishing between them. Everything was the same, and she was lulled into a kind of vegetable state. There was absolutely nothing to stimulate her senses, so she became a sort of zombie, that went to classes, ate, slept, went to classes... At least here outside, felt somewhat natural. And best of all- different.
She turned to the girl, who seemed to be somewhere far away, and unhappy. That wasn't surprising though. Who would be happy in this place? "My name is Zodiac by the way. I don't think we've met before." she decided to break the silence this time. Taking a lock of brown hair in her hand, she wound it around a finger, as she often did when she was bored or thinking. Suddenly wishing for a book, she leaned back against the back of the bench and gave a small sigh. The dread of going back to class was also growing, which caused her to shift uncomfortably, and glance back in the direction of campus. I wish I was back home. It was something she wished for frequently. If only her life was like one of those old fairy tales. Wishing didn't work that well in reality.

After a few blank seconds, only filled by the soft hissing of the rising and collapsing water, the girl beside spoke again. When she mentioned home, the longing for sand became almost unbearable, up the point when a low groan burst from her mouth.
"Same, though I have never been a fan of the forest. I long for the sun, and for the ocean. Being away from them for ever this long, it feels as if I part of me has been torn away. I hate it."
This hell, it was the same. A dull routine. Never did she think school could be as bleak and as dull as this place made it. Yes, it was very luxuries, with computers and these crisp uniforms, but all the same, it was cold and colorless. Why had her mother allowed her to attend here? Before, homeschooling had worked just fine, and even better, her lessons could take place by the rolling waves.
Shaking her head at the girl's last comment, Ivory responded.
"No, I don't believe we have. My name is Ivory, nice to meet you."
She continued to run her fingers over the cool metal that made up her necklace. Cherishing the only relic her father had left her, this piece of jewelry never left her sight. The only times when she dared to leave it where when she swan, and that was only for the great fear of loosing it. For both the memory of her birth dad and her beloved land lay in this one necklace, and now it was the only thing that seemed to keep her sane. That and the memories, but they could be both calming and frightening.
The day was rainy, and alone in a blue room sat Ivory. Neatly, she arranged her prized collection of shells upon a oak desk. For each one, she would run her fingers over it's surface, and then hold the thing to her ear, listening to the waves she could not be enjoying at this moment.
With a creak, the white, wooden door of her room swung open, a small, stout girl stood in the entrance. She was big for her age, and not just height wise. A curly mess of black locks fell to her shoulders, and her face looked life she had been continually sucking on a lemon. Pursed lips open into a wide smile, but not a friendly one, more of a knowing one.
"Ivy, play with me," she demanded in a high voice.
"Not now, Hannah. Maybe later," Ivory answered in a distracted voice.
With a sly smile and a hmph, the girl spun on her heels whining pitifully down the hall. "Daaaddy, Ivy won't play with mean! She yelled at me!" With large eyes she added even more sweetly, "You should do something, I never do anything to her, and she yeeelled at me."
Booms followed as a large set of footsteps cascaded down the hall, pictures on the wall seemed to rattle. If Ivory hadn't known better, it would seem like an earthquake had struck.
A thick head popped into the small room, followed by the enormous body. Blue eyes bore into the slinking girl, lips curled into a snarl. He raised his hand, then though better of it. Closing the door softly behind him, her step-father slinked behind the girl's chair. He brushed a lock of her blond hair with his meaty fist, angrily she snatched it away.
"Don't touch me," she squeaked.
The big man just cackled. His head stooped down to her level, foul breath floated towards her as he spoke.
"Now, I come and provide you and your mother with a nice funds and food on the table, and is this how you repay me? By throwing a fit at my daughter?"
Ivory tried to get something out, to protest that the younger child had made up every word, but the words wouldn't surface. With a satisfied smile, the man balled his hand to a fist, bringing it to her shoulder before exiting. Leaving the blond headed girl teary and clutching her bruised arm.
Rubbing her hand over her shoulder, a habit Ivory couldn't rid- every time a memory where pain was inflicted surfaced, she couldn't help but comfort the part injured, even though it was only a memory- Ivory avoided looking at Zodiac, for fear that the tears would come once more.
